SxS-1 Memory Card

Sony is enhancing the format with the launch of new series, SxS-1 memory card to give professional videographers even more recording flexibility.

The SxS-1 (SBS-32G1) is fully compliant with the ExpressCard™ industry standard and features high capacity and super fast data transfer speed. Videographers can store up to 32GB of footage – enough for up to 100 minutes of full HD 1920 x 1080 video at 35 Mbps or 140 minutes of 1440 x 1080 video at 25 Mbps.* Large data files such as high definition video can be transferred at up to 800 Mbps* - for efficient non-linear video editing. It’s also extremely compact and reliable to ensure faultless on-location performance in the harshest of environments. (*The speed is measured on XDCAM EX camcorder)

With its affordable price point, SxS-1 opens up exciting new opportunities in mainstream filming and demonstrates the commitment of Sony to support XDCAM EX with practical media solutions. Perfect for videographers looking to capture and edit in high definition at an affordable price.

Users can check the card life* on their PMW-EX1R and PMW-350 camcorders and even see an alarm when the data rewriting limit is reached. (*The new card is also long lasting with an approximately 5 year estimated life when recording at full capacity once per day.)

The SxS-1 will be available from December 2009. It will be fully compatible with the PMW-EX1R (launched December 2009) and PMW-350 camcorders. Existing XDCAM EX models (PMW-EX1, PMW-EX3, PMWEX30 and PMW-10MD) are also compatible following a firmware upgrade, available early 2010.

MEAD-MS01 Memory Card Adapter

Some time ago, it was discovered that it was possible to use consumer SD memory cards in EX camcorders by using off-the-shelf adaptors. This can be made to work, but hasn’t always been reliable and has many limitations. Sony have now decided that they too will support the use of consumer memory cards by introducing their own adapter. This new adapter (MEAD-MS01) makes it possible to use Sony Memory Sticks in any EX camcorder. If you already have an EX1 or EX3 then you will need a firmware update before you can use the adapter and it is recommended that you use the high performance HX range of memory sticks of 4GB size or over. As this has come from Sony, you know that provided you use the recommended media it will work. However you do need to understand that you can only shoot at the standard frame rates, so no over or under-cranking. Also as you are using consumer media it is easier to corrupt your files. Having said that it would certainly be worth having one of these in your kit bag as a stand-by.

“The camera-mountable nanoFlash, a miniaturized version of the award winning Flash XDR, has two CF card slots and embedded audio support only (see Flash XDR for analog audio I/O + four CF slots). nanoFlash can be powered from a camcorder battery (6.5 to 20V) and records 1080i60/50, 1080p30/25/24 or 720p60/50 at full-raster (1920×1080i/p and 1280×720p) 4:2:2 MPEG2 at 50/100 Mbps (Long-GOP) or 100/160 Mbps (I-Frame only). As both a recorder and player, nanoFlash sports HD-SDI I/O as well as LTC-in, RS-232/485 (remote control) and a power/start/tally-light connector. High-quality MPEG2 video and up to eight-channels of embedded audio and time-code can be stored in the MXF format using the FAT32 file system. nanoFlash seamlessly records and plays back across the two CompactFlash cards.

32GB Compact Flash cards, available for US $135 each (about 1/10 the cost of other professional video cards), enable 140/70 minutes of record time of high-quality 50/100Mbps 4:2:2 footage (per load of two cards). (Note: bit-rates above 100Mbps require the 300X 16GB CF cards for US$216 each). Unlike Firewire based hard-disk recorders, which merely copy the native camera video quality, nanoFlash can encode a live camera’s “never-compressed” HD-SDI output to a much higher quality – higher bit-rate with less compression, eliminating most of the mosquito noise and blurring artifacts. Full-raster 1920×1080 (as opposed to 1440×1080 or 1280×1080) processing, coupled with 4:2:2 color (instead of 4:2:0), greatly improves horizontal resolution as well as keying and compositing operations. Unique features such as 24p pull-down removal, image flip, time-lapse recording and RAID1 redundant recording capability (automatic backup) further enhance the workflow.

nanoFlash eliminates the need for costly tape decks. A daisy-chain of up to four stackable Lexar Firewire-800 UDMA CompactFlash readers (total cost = US $240) is the only “deck” required. Editors now have direct access to up to 280 minutes of 50 Mbps 4:2:2 footage (four CF cards) from their NLE timeline, without copying to their hard-drive. High performance (330 Mbps read-speed), coupled with very low access times (0.4 mS) enable up to four streams of 50 Mbps playback from the NLE timeline.

“nanoFlash is a fantastic addition to virtually all HD-SDI based cameras, offering high-quality recording / playback and enabling a tapeless workflow on low-cost CompactFlash media,” noted Mike Schell President of Convergent Design. Additionally, finished projects can be archived by recording back to nanoFlash via the HD-SDI out from an NLE. The file(s) can then be copied from CF cards to a Blu-ray disk for long-term storage (a 50GB Blu-ray disk at US$35 holds 60 minutes of visually lossless 100 Mbps 4:2:2 Long-GOP video).

nanoFlash includes a special +5V output tap for powering HDMI ? HD-SDI (nanoConnect) or HD-SDI ? HDMI (nanoView) converters. These converters can be mounted on the backside of nanoFlash enabling recording from HDMI based cameras or playback to HDMI/DVI monitors and projectors for presentations, museums, and client review, etc.

nanoFlash can be further enhanced with an ASI I/O firmware upgrade (pricing TBD). ASI I/O (MPEG2 TS) enables use of nanoFlash in HD ENG/EFP (live news coverage) and video over IP applications. Programmable bit-rates from 17.5 to 100 Mbps easily support microwave and satellite transmissions.”

Any converted XDCAM EX (MXF) clips* can now also be written back and stored to XDCAM Prodisc’s using XDCAM decks or drives such as the PDW-U1 for archive in the native XDCAM HD MXF file structure.

The PDW-U1 directly supports all codecs, resolutions and frame rates available in the XDCAM HD Optical Disc family.

Version 2.8 of XDCAM Transfer had provided some bug fixes and other features including:

1. It now allows for proper bridging and import to FCP of XDCAM EX clips that Exceed the 4GB FAT32 file limit (approx 16min@25Mbps or 12 min@35Mbps or clips that span multiple cards.

2. In a similar fashion to the way XDCAM Transfer works to import the SMI file of XDCAM EX bridged or spanned clips (as above) it now also allows for SMI files to be imported from XDCAM Prodisc as well, meaning that clip lists created in the camera or with PDZ-1 PC software and written back to the Prodisc as SMI files can now be used to batch import clips via XDCAM Transfer to FCP using the SMI as a “select scene” list with handles, with the FCP bin set in the “icon view” when you import you can then drop the “select” clips onto the timeline in the same sequence order as the original SMI file.

3. There is also now a way to export edited sequences from FCP back to XDCAM Transfer and then record them back onto the SxS card – this is handy if you want to use the camera or deck to play out edited material on either the HDSDI** port for display or transmission purposes or also in the case of the deck you can use the HDMI port.

These features are now fully maintained in version 2.9.

*Note you require the latest version XDCAM Browser with the optional MAIN CONCEPT MPEG plug-in license in order to convert XDCAM EX MP4 wrapped files to XDCAM MXF files. Use the XDCAM Browser Software with the plug-in as the first step in this process and then use the Browser or XDCAM Transfer to copy the MXF files to the PDW-U1. We recommend conversion to XDCAM 422 50Mbps files in order to preserve the 1920×1080 square pixel raster and full image quality of the original XDCAM EX HQ 35Mbps file. XDCAM EX SQ 25Mbps MP4 files can simply be rewrapped to 25Mbps MXF files.

** Note in 23.98 Fps a 2/3 pull down is added via HDSDI play out. The PMW-EX30 with the firmware loaded that shipped from November 08 (available as a NC upgrade = version 1.11) can play out 23.98 PSF without pulldown.

This new utility allows the affordable PDW-U1 drive to both read and record XDCAM MXF SD and HD files with XDCAM Prodisc media from/to either Windows or Mac platforms, as well as, providing general utility functions for the PDW-U1. The PDW-U1 directly supports all codecs, resolutions and frame rates available in the Sony XDCAM Optical Disc family including SD DVCAM 25 Mbps, SD MPEG IMX 30, 40, 50Mbps, HD 420 25Mbps, HD 420 35Mbps and HD 422 50Mbps.
